Background of the Study
Gender roles have long influenced parenting practices, shaping the expectations and responsibilities assigned to mothers and fathers. In Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area, traditional cultural norms have historically defined distinct roles in child-rearing, but evolving societal values have begun to challenge these stereotypes (Udo, 2023). Recent studies conducted between 2023 and 2025 indicate that gender-specific expectations significantly impact parenting styles, affecting emotional development and educational outcomes (Etim, 2024). The interplay of modern influences and traditional values creates a complex environment where parents navigate dual expectations, balancing professional demands with familial responsibilities (Okon, 2025). Variations in parental roles may lead to disparities in nurturing practices, ultimately influencing children’s socialization and future gender perceptions. Changing economic conditions and urbanization have prompted shifts in family structures and role assignments, necessitating a re-evaluation of established parenting paradigms. This study seeks to investigate how these dynamics manifest in daily practices and what implications they hold for child development. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for developing interventions that support balanced parenting and promote gender equality within the family structure. The comprehensive analysis will provide valuable insights into the evolving nature of gender roles and their impact on familial relationships (Ebo, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Despite progressive shifts in societal attitudes, entrenched gender roles continue to influence parenting practices in Ikot Ekpene, often leading to unequal distribution of responsibilities and affecting child development outcomes (Udo, 2023). This persistent imbalance creates challenges in achieving equitable parenting and may contribute to long-term gender disparities. Recent observations suggest that traditional expectations hinder the adoption of shared parenting models, limiting opportunities for both parents to engage fully (Etim, 2024). The study seeks to identify these challenges and assess the impact of gender roles on parenting, calling for evidence-based reforms (Okon, 2025).
